After a rural life with a large garden spent on the peninsula, Sue and Murray downsized to their 1960s beach house, situated above the Takamatua wharf, and completely renovated it with a relaxed seaside feel. From the house and garden there are expansive views across the bay, giving a strong sense of connection to the harbour and surrounding landscape. The garden has been redesigned to suit its coastal setting. Hardy perennials, evergreen shrubs and citrus provide colour, structure and shelter, while espaliered apple and pear trees frame the vegetable garden. Raised beds make the productive garden easy to manage and enjoyable to work in.
The result is a thoughtful, practical and welcoming garden that reflects Sue and Murray’s love of place, land and community. Visitors will enjoy a home and garden shaped by coastal conditions, rural experience and a strong sense of belonging.
