The Pavitt Cottage is of immense historical significance to Canterbury. The Pavitts and architect Samuel Farr developed the first powered sawmill on Banks Peninsula here in the 1850s, initiating the timber milling industry that would underpin the Peninsula economy for the next 50 years and build Christchurch City on the treeless plains. The cottage, now beautifully restored and owned by a local community Trust, stands as a tranquil reminder of the vast industry that once dominated and transformed the Peninsula.
