Tanglewood
HOUSE + GARDEN

239 Middle Road, Pigeon Bay
Tanglewood dates back to circa 1859 or possibly a little earlier. Its first owners were roading constructors who were part-paid through ownership of the tract of land. Its further history is through the Hay family, as a residence/farm for the teacher and, with his untimely death, as a family farm. The last 50 years have seen it as a weekend bach. Originally built as a two-up, two-down cottage facing the orchard, it was gradually extended to include a cow byre, a small blacksmith’s area, and sheds and later bedrooms and a lounge to give the road-facing view that is now so familiar. The garden has ‘evolved‘ from the existing original plantings. No plan, just us finding out what likes to grow in the damp conditions and expanding from that.
